Iowa Campus Compact is pleased to welcome 18 Iowa Nonprofits as the newest partners in our mission to strengthen community-campus relationships in the Tyson Foods Summer Community Internship Program. Our partners will employ 22 current undergraduate students as Tyson interns to work on issues such as food insecurity, disability advocacy, immigrant services, among others.
“This is the second year of this valuable partnership with Tyson,” said Emily Shields, Executive Director of Iowa Campus Compact. “We are grateful for the chance to work together to provide nonprofits with capacity support and students with important career experiences.”
The Tyson Foods Summer Community Internship Program is a partnership between Campus Compact and Tyson Foods that provides grants to community organizations to hire a summer intern. Campus Compact works with member colleges and universities to recruit students for the positions and provides additional training to the interns for their professional and leadership development.

3rd District Juvenile Court Services
The mission of Juvenile Court Services (JCS) is to serve the welfare of children and their families within a sound framework of restorative justice to ensure public safety, while providing the guidance, structure, support and services needed to every child under its supervision. The Tyson Community Service intern will advance immigration goals by building cultural competency and community outreach.
Boys Town has been a national leader in the care and treatment of children since its founding in 1917 by Father Edward Flanagan. Boys Town is one of the largest nonprofit, nonsectarian child and family care organizations in the country, and provides compassionate, research-proven treatment for behavioral, emotional and physical problems. The Tyson Community Service intern will have a positive impact on children, families, and communities.
Buy Fresh Buy Local – Siouxland, Inc.
The Sioux City Farmers Market is one of the most important events of the year. It brings together all the people of the surrounding area to enjoy the bounty of the locally grown produce, delicious baked goods, and beautifully handcrafted items. Everything that is for sale is grown or produced by the person selling it. The Tyson Community Service intern will help the farmers market continue to grow, develop and develop the Power Of Produce (POP) program for the market, and develop the downtown area of Sioux City.
Camp High Hopes
Camp High Hopes offers year-round therapeutic recreation programs and respites in Sioux City, IA designed to enrich the lives of youth and adults with diagnosed disabilities, chronic illnesses, and other special needs. The Tyson Community Service intern will serve as the primary caregiver for an assigned group of campers with disabilities and through assisting in the delivery of program activities at the camp.
Food Bank of Siouxland
Food Bank of Siouxland is a year-round source of food to 100 nonprofit organizations in Siouxland serving an average of 16,088 people each month. The Tyson Community Service interns will raise awareness about the Food Bank of Siouxland and help communicate their mission and need to the public so that they can be better advocates for and better serve the food insecure people in the community.
Girls Inc. of Sioux City
Girls Inc. helps girls and young women gain the skills, confidence and self-awareness needed to become successful women. Any girl between the ages of six and eighteen is eligible to attend after school and during the summer. Staff at Girls Inc. work each day to meet the mission of “Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart, and bold.” By working with families, teachers, counselors and other providers to ensure the positive development, health and well-being of Girls Inc. members, staff ensure that girls and families are connected and/or referred to services that can meet their needs. Staff have opportunities to create and maintain relationships with schools, employers, and families so that the needs of community are met at a micro- (family) level.
Haven House Family Services Center
Haven House is dedicated to eliminating violence in the lives of men, women, and children through empowerment, education, social action and support services. The Tyson Community Service intern will assist clients with signing up for adult education and help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with immigration services.
Heartland Family Service
Heartland Family Service strengthens individuals and families in the community through education, counseling, and support services. The Tyson Community Service intern will provide screening and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness, including those who are living in housing through agency programs, on the streets, or in other places not meant for human habitation.
Mary J. Treglia Community House
Mary J. Treglia Community House welcomes, empowers, educates, and advocates for Siouxland’s newcomers. The Tyson Community Service interns will engage English Language Learners in conversation using conversation topic starters, word games, printed materials, story-telling, etc. Additionally, the interns will coach adults on how to fill out forms, apply for jobs, navigate our healthcare system, or understand how to get a drivers license.
Mid-Step Services provides residential, vocational, educational, and recreational services to people with intellectual disabilities in a caring, supportive environment where each individual is encouraged to reach his or her highest potential. The Tyson Community Service intern will coordinate social media efforts to share the organization’s mission and upcoming events in the community.
Norm Waitt Sr. YMCA
The Norm Waitt, Sr. YMCA strengthens the community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Tyson Community Service intern will help foster a cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined and also works to build the community’s understanding of the YMCA’s cause and impact through development and implementation of effective marketing and communications strategies.
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Siouxland
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Siouxland focuses on the critical needs of children and their families by providing them a place to stay and find comfort and filling the critical need of hunger through the Family Lunch Program. The Tyson Community Service intern will grow the RMHC of Siouxland Family Lunch Program in frequency and families served, with the goal of providing 2,500 lunches in 2019.
Sioux City College Access Network
The Sioux City College Access Network is a community-based college access coordinating body supported by a team of community and education leaders representing K-12, higher education, nonprofit sector, government, business, and philanthropy. The Tyson Community Service interns will develop a community data dashboard and resource guide to be displayed on the Sioux City CAN website and develop a post-secondary education awareness campaign that engages adult learners in Sioux City, with an emphasis on disenfranchised groups such as immigrants and English language learners.
Sioux City Human Rights Commission
The Sioux City Human Rights Commission investigates discrimination complaints that occur in Sioux City, Iowa regarding housing, employment, public accommodations, education and credit. The Tyson Community Service intern will develop an outreach campaign involving 1) holding a minimum of three “pop-up” events at local businesses designed to reach the immigrant and other disenfranchised communities; 2) hosting a minimum of two outreach activities at the Mary Treglia Community House (as agreed to by their executive director); 3) planning and/or hosting of at least two Fair Housing outreach events, including the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act.
Siouxland Mental Health Center
Siouxland Mental Health Center provides a comprehensive range of mental health services for the evaluation and treatment of people of all ages experiencing mental illness, individual or family emotional distress, and overwhelmingly stressful circumstances. The Tyson Community Service Intern will help expand the center’s outreach to marginalized communities with a particular focus on those with language barriers.
The Bridge of Storm Lake
The Bridge of Storm Lake strives to care and advocate for Storm Lake youth in vulnerable places of life by meeting them where they are, building a supportive community there, and providing training toward a more hope-filled future. The Tyson Community Service intern will assist with the summer lunch program, provides healthy meals to youth in the community.
TS Community Foundation
TS Community Foundation supports the TS Institute, which specializes in delivering free personal financial education to consumers of all ages in regions the TS Banking Group conducts business, including the Council Bluffs region. The Tyson Community Service intern will improve the economic and financial education for constituents in the Council Bluffs Hispanic and immigrant community with focus on budgeting, proper use of credit, understanding taxes, insurance, and entrepreneurship.
Women Aware is dedicated to transforming the emotional and economic future of women and men in transition through advocacy, education, information and referral. The Tyson Community Service intern will Over the course of 8 weeks, the summer intern will develop and implement community outreach and marketing efforts, liaise with city officials, Siouxland residents, other social service agencies, and local businesses.
