Now Hiring: Summer AmeriCorps VISTA Positions

Iowa colleges and non-profit organizations are now hiring for Iowa Campus Compact’s 2020 Summer VISTA program. Members of the AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate program will serve for ten weeks, receiving a modest bi-weekly living allowance and the choice of an end-of-service education award or cash stipend.

Summer VISTA Sites 

Arthritis Foundation (Des Moines):

The Summer VISTA member will enhance the existing volunteer management process with a focus on recruiting new volunteers. Specifically, the member will assist with the Live Yes! Arthritis Network by helping to reconnect with local assisted living homes, retirement communities, and other areas, such as local colleges, to recruit volunteers of all ages across the state of Iowa.

Hiring for 1 position.

The Bridge of Storm Lake (Storm Lake):

Summer VISTA members will serve and help build capacity for the Summer Youth Program and two youth run social enterprises (Endless Sea Coffee Roasting & Cultivate Garden Training). Members will lead outreach to various neighborhoods to connect youth and families to youth activities in the community, while promoting holistic, positive youth development. This will include coordinating weekly Neighborhood Outreach nights and assisting with other Bridge summer programming.

Hiring for 4 positions.

Buena Vista University Office of Civic Engagement (Storm Lake):

The Summer VISTA member will develop the capacity and reach of the Little Free Pantries. Members will develop partnerships to meet member and clientele needs, develop a better understanding of individuals who utilize the pantries and their cultural and dietary needs, and share more about the availability of the Little Free Pantries to increase usage and donations.

Hiring for 1 position.

Central College (Pella):

The Summer VISTA member will develop interventions in collaboration with Central’s community partners, who have a proven track record of designing and delivering programs and supports that are effective in addressing poverty. Specifically, the member will organize, develop infrastructure, and facilitate informational, interactive group visits from children and youth who represent areas of concentrations of high poverty. Visits may be centered around sustainability, health, and wellness, financial literacy, and preparation for college.

Central College is no longer recruiting for this position.

Iowa Community Action Association (Des Moines):

The Summer VISTA member will work with ICAA to develop materials, graphics, quotes, videos, etc. to tell the story of poverty in Iowa with the goal of increasing understanding and challenging the stereotypes about poverty. This will include co-facilitating a planning team for outreach at the Iowa State Fair, gathering information to update ICAA’s Storybank and share through ICAA’s social media platforms, and assisting with planning an annual training conference.

Lutheran Services in Iowa (Des Moines)

Summer VISTA members will play an essential role in the growth and capacity development of both the Global Greens Farmers’ Market and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Members will assist Global Greens staff in the promotion and development of the urban agriculture program, share in event planning responsibilities, and support the Global Greens training farm and community gardens. Additionally, members will recruit community gardeners from newly resettled groups and work with resettlement agencies to better serve those communities.
