Meet Geo Almanza!

January 5, 2017

Meet our new VISTA Leader, Geovanni Almanza! Geo is no stranger to Iowa Campus Compact, and we’re excited to have him on the team.

10394002_410831102418539_5522083491301285446_nGeo graduated from Loras College in May 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in politics, international studies, and Spanish. While there, he was a part-time member in our Iowa College AmeriCorps Program. While serving with AmeriCorps, Geo helped Loras College create a retention foundation for First Generation College Students.

He then worked for the City of Dubuque Human Rights Department as an Americorps VISTA member through Iowa Campus Compact. During his service, he saw firsthand how local government, non-profit, and higher education organizations can join hands and improve their communities.

After completing his work with VISTA, Geo moved to Goiânia, Brazil, where he taught passionate university students as a Fulbright Teaching Assistant.

Geo’s passions include drinking coffee, traveling, reading, and eating great food. He is always looking for recommendations for any of the former.

Geo visited Rome as a student at Loras College.

We asked Geo a few questions to get to know him better:

Favorite Word: Elaborate – it makes me happy when people ask me to! It means they are listening.

Least Favorite Word: No (even though I say it way too often, so maybe it is my favorite word?)

What turns you on creatively? Catch me after the first cup of coffee and it is go, go, go!

What turns you off? When the battery to one of my electronics dies. 🙁

What sound or noise do you love? When the plane’s engines are pushed to full thrust! No better sound!

What sound or noise do you hate? Though no longer relevant in today’s day and age, the connection noise when my household use to have dial-up internet.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Commercial airline pilot. I love to fly, but I’m too tall for the cockpit.

What profession would you not like to do?  MATH TEACHER! Anytime letters can be substituted for numbers and then I have to explain it makes me highly uncomfortable.

GeoWhat are you most excited about in your new role? I am ecstatic about being able to use my skills and talents in a place where I can see with my own eyes the outcome. Of course, this position is only part of the equation. The intersection between data, public organizations, and education inspires me. I am really excited about the opportunity of being at Iowa Campus Compact where I can grow and work toward something I care about.
