Meet Our 2018-19 AmeriCorps Members

The Iowa College AmeriCorps Program (ICAP) strives to increase levels of college student volunteering for the purpose of building capacity for local nonprofits in their community. Members serve on campus full-time for 11 months coordinating opportunities and building capacity. They earn a living allowance and education award upon successful completion.

Meet our 2018-2019 full-time members:

Brook Boyd

ICAP Brook Boyd
I serve because I want to improve society’s views of today’s youth. #WeServeIowa
  • Service Site: Clarke University
  • Hometown: Clarion, IA
  • College and Degree: Morningside College, BS in Biology and Chemistry
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: Learning experience that impacted me was euthanizing a family pet. I did not want to be a vet because of euthanasia, but one I experienced it myself and realized its role in animal healthcare really helped me decide that I becoming a vet is something I want to pursue.
  • Why did you choose to serve? It is very important to have an active role in your community. It is the best way to build connections and establish relationships outside of your normal niche in society.

  • What is one word you would use to describe you? Determined
  • What is your favorite movie? Pirates of the Caribbean
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? Attending veterinary school.
  • What is a fun fact about you? I am full of random, useless, but interesting facts/info.

Chelsea Moore

  • Service Site: Grand View University (2nd Year AmeriCorps Member)
  • Hometown: Chicago, IL
  • College and Degree: University of Southern California, B.A. Italian
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: Serving as a VISTA!
  • Why did you choose to serve? I chose to serve a second term because I have really grown to like my host site (Grand View University) and the work that I am doing there (civic and community engagement). I saw potential for more professional and personal growth in staying another year.
  • What is your favorite quote? “I have always been the woman of my dreams.” –Nayyirah Waheed
  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Free-spirited
  • What is your favorite movie? Home Alone
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? Living in LA, hopefully working at my alma mater doing more civic engagement and community partnership work… Or maybe traveling??
  • What is a fun fact about you? The #1 item on my bucket list is to travel to all 50 states! I have been to 25 so I am half way there (most recent was Utah this summer, where I also visited my first national park!).

Lauren Janning

  • Service Site: Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley
  • Hometown: Carroll, IA
  • College and Degree: University of Northern Iowa – Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion and Education: Emphasis in Global Health and Health Disparities
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: I had the opportunity to visit Central Iowa Shelter and Services in downtown Des Moines and learn about their efforts to provide housing, job skills, encouragement, and hope to individuals experiencing homelessness and/or poverty. I was so convicted by the needs of these people in the heart of my community and recognized my obligation to serve them in any and every way that I could. I am constantly reminded of my privilege and the humility required to positively and genuinely impact the lives around me. I know there is always someone to be supported, challenged, or loved more.
  • Why did you choose to serve? My life has been filled with abundant blessings, and I recognized the privilege I had to share that with others through AmeriCorps. I also know that my service and love can bring empowerment and equity to a community and contribute to its social and economic development. Thanks to some of my greatest role models, I have an understanding of what service looks like and a passion to see that value grow within myself and others.

  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Restorative
  • What is your favorite movie? The Help
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? Professionally, I’d love to continue working for the Volunteer Center of Cedar Valley and serving my local community. Personally, I hope I’ll have the honor of taking care of my family and supporting others in need.
  • What is a fun fact about you? I had the opportunity to study abroad in England, Ireland, and Wales and saw the queen while I was there!

Breana Rocha

    College and Degree: Iowa Western Community college, Criminal Justice
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: The healthy families drive by boys town because it showed me the need in the community.
  • Why did you choose to serve? It is a chance for me to network and to help my community in many different ways.

  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Determined
  • What is your favorite movie? Mamma Mia 2
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? I would like to be a police officer for Omaha Police Department
  • What is a fun fact about you? I have been on the Speaker of the House Balcony in Washington DC

Melissa Curtis

ICAP Melissa Curtis

  • Service Site: University of Northern Iowa
  • Hometown: Manchester, Iowa
  • College and Degree: the University of Northern Iowa – Interactive Digital Studies, B.A.
  • A learning experience that changed/impacted you: After starting college, I became overwhelmed with my classes very quickly. I felt miserable and definitely wasn’t enjoying college. Something needed to change, and that something was my major. It was a wake-up call telling me I didn’t know myself and what interested me. This was scary, but with the help of many people, I found a major that suited me. Throughout the experience, I learned that change is uncomfortable but necessary to grow.
  • Why did you choose to serve? I want to help others find their volunteer power.

  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Responsible
  • What is your favorite movie? Currently, Thor: Ragnarok
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? I see myself working in an academic library, empowering others through reading, research, and outreach.
  • What is a fun fact about you? My full name is 21 characters and I was born on the 21st.

Hannah Ganzel

ICAP Hannah Ganzel

  • Service Site: Cornell College (2nd Year AmeriCorps Member)
  • Hometown: My hometown is Mount Vernon, Iowa.
  • College and Degree: I went to college at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and majored in Spanish and Film Studies.
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: My mom had a stroke when I was twelve, which changed the way that I was raised and the way I saw the world.
  • Why did you choose to serve? It seemed like the perfect transition from undergrad to grad school, and I wanted to give back to the community that I grew up in.
  • What is your favorite quote? “ART is the most effective mode of communication that exists” – John Dewey
  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Optimistic
  • What is your favorite movie? Hitchcock’s 1940 film Rebecca
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? I would like to be receiving my Ph. D. in Film Studies and beginning the job search for professor positions.
  • What is a fun fact about you? I have camped in the Sahara Desert.

Terrell Moore

  • College and Degree: Campbellsville/ Criminal Justice and History
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: Losing something that meant so much to me
  • Why did you choose to serve? GWG is why I also love the opportunity to rebuild myself and learn from my mistakes
  • What is your favorite quote? Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding
  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Authentic
  • What is your favorite movie? The Blindside or Shawshank Redemption
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? Coaching my own Wrestling team wrestling is my passion
  • What is a fun fact about you? Voted Most Unforgettable beside taking third with my collegiate team its the best award I’ve ever won

Tawney Schreier

  • Hometown: Storm Lake, Iowa
    College and Degree: Buena Vista University: Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Public Relations and Digital Media
  • Learning experience that changed/impacted you: I had the opportunity to serve on the NE-IA District Key Club Board in high school, which allowed me to serve as a District Administrator and advise students while I was in college. It was so neat to be able to help students find their passion for service the way my administrators helped me.
  • Why did you choose to serve? I chose to serve to help the community that provided me so many positive experiences growing up.

  • What is one word you would use to describe yourself? Outgoing
  • What is your favorite movie? A Goofy Movie
  • In five years, what would you like to be doing? Traveling
  • What is a fun fact about you? I love all things Disney!
