Iowa Campus Compact seeking host sites for VISTA Community Corps

September 12, 2018

For immediate release, September 12, 2018: Iowa Campus Compact (IACC) announced today the opportunity for interested higher education, nonprofit, or government agencies to serve to serve as host sites for our VISTA Community Corps program. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a program through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) that seeks to build capacity for organizations that alleviate poverty in our communities.

Founded in 2007, the Iowa Campus Compact VISTA Community Corps has been expanding opportunities for community-based organizations to receive full-time support from a national service member. The organization is specifically seeking nonprofits that work in the areas of economic opportunity, education, and healthy futures and are interested in strengthening their community-campus partnerships.

The focus on healthy futures is new this year and allows us to welcome host sites focused on increasing low-income communities’ access to opportunities to improve their health including healthcare services, health insurance, health education, hunger alleviation programs (community gardens, cooking classes, etc.), emergency food, and non-academic supports on college campuses (housing, transportation, childcare, etc.) aimed at helping low-income students succeed.

Deadlines are available throughout the year for organizational applicants depending on the desired member start date. New applicants should schedule a pre-application consultation with our Program Coordinator Monique Ellefson (mellefson {at} compact(.)org). Complete information about the program and application process is available here and you can read about our current members and their work here.

Nonprofit host sites have the ability to hire a college graduate with the skills to meet their needs and develop a capacity-building work plan. Iowa Campus Compact supports nonprofit staff and national service members through training and development and provides sites with opportunities for other capacity support, particularly in the area of higher education partnerships. There is a cost share match to sites.

Iowa Campus Compact is a statewide association of college and university presidents providing leadership for the civic mission of higher education. We strengthen the capacity of our public, private, and two-year institution members to prepare all students to become engaged citizens. IACC supports the integration of community service into the cultures of its member campuses by facilitating collaboration, sponsoring programs, advocating policy, and promoting public awareness. In support of the vision and mission, Iowa Campus Compact manages the Iowa College AmeriCorps Program and the VISTA Program through support from the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
