March 10, 2022

DES MOINES, IOWA – March 10, 2022 – Campus Compact and Tyson Foods today announced the nonprofit organizations that were selected to receive grants for the fourth year of the Tyson Summer Community Internship Program. Grantees will receive funding to support a full-time college student intern for eight weeks in the summer of 2022. This provides an invaluable opportunity for select college students to gain professional experience in nonprofits while making a positive impact in local communities.

A total of 22 organizations, some from previous years and some not, located in Sioux City and Storm Lake, Iowa, and South Sioux City, Nebraska, will receive a combined total of $96,600 for 23 summer internship positions. The organizations are listed below and will also receive support from Iowa & Minnesota Campus Compact in creating and supporting positions that have maximum impact on their organizational mission and student development.

“It has been so rewarding getting to familiarize myself with the culture and faces of this cool city,” said Riley Salzman, a student at Morningside College and 2021 intern with the Sioux City Human Rights Commission. “During my various outreach adventures, I have met so many amazing individuals and have hopefully aided them in protecting themselves or their family from acts of discrimination.”

In its five years, the program has partnered with 36 organizations supporting 110 interns across Northwest Iowa and Northeast Nebraska. Genevieve Bundy, a student at Morningside College who interned with Women Aware last summer stated, “Throughout my internship I have come to understand that the needs of the community are complex and require lots of organizations and agencies to work together to fill various needs.”

Future student interns will take on a variety of roles within these organizations that allow them to take on responsibility, learn new skills, and build capacity. This includes creating immigrant outreach programs for the juvenile court system, building a social media strategies, and participating in a culinary internship for a homeless shelter. Students interested in applying can review job descriptions and apply them through an online form.
