2019 Civic Action Academy

See the agenda for the 2019 Civic Action Academy! This unique professional development opportunity for students interested in learning new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. The event will be held on November 8 and 9, 2019 at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. Students from across the Midwest and beyond (undergraduate and graduate) are invited to learn from professionals across sectors. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthropy, leadership, dialogue, advocacy and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on other campuses and network with peers. Accommodations The Cedar Valley has many accommodations to choose from for this event. This event is designed for campus teams to come together and work on creating and implementing strong Civic Action Plans. In 2016, all of Iowa Campus Compact’s member presidents signed the National Campus Compact Civic Action Statement. The statement includes a commitment to develop and share a Civic Action Plan within a year. IACC is working to support our member campuses in developing and implementing these plans. Teams can include individuals from across campus and beyond including faculty, staff, administrators, students and community partners. We also recommend engaging leaders from across campus including faculty, staff from a variety of areas (diversity, ministry, teaching and learning, research, etc), student leaders, and community partners. It is strongly encouraged that at least one senior administrator attends with the team and diversity and equity staff are particularly encouraged to attend. Are you looking to engage and support rural communities or is your campus located in a rural community? Join us October 30th to connect with peers and get new ideas and strategies for these unique settings. Illinois Campus Compact along with Missouri Campus Compact, Iowa Campus Compact, and the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs are excited to host a Rural Community Engagement Summit with the support of Western Illinois University at their Quad Cities Campus. The day-long event will focus on the unique demographics of the rural Midwest and the role Higher Education can play in supporting sustainable rural communities. Campus Compact membership institutions and community organizations can purchase tickets for $25, non-member institutions can purchase tickets for $50. Scholarships available on a case by case basis.
