Iowa Campus Voting Summit

Join us for the free, virtual Iowa Campus Voting Summit, a nonpartisan student voter engagement summit to help campuses prepare for student voting this fall and beyond. This event aims to solidify campus efforts to get their faculty, staff, administration, and students out to vote for the 2020 General Election and the future elections.

The Iowa Campus Voting Summit will be hosted live online on Friday, September 25th, 2020 from 12pm-4pm CT on Zoom.

The University of Iowa, the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, Iowa Campus Compact, and the Students Learn Students Vote Coalition are hosting this statewide Iowa Campus Voting Summit.

12:00 pm – Welcome from Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate

12:15 pm – Plenary: The State of Student Voting in Iowa with Daniel Zeno, Policy and Advocacy Director, ACLU of Iowa

12:45 to 1:30 pm – Concurrent Session 1 (choose one)

I voted, now what?

Will we know the election results on November 3? How do we prepare spaces for students who are happy or upset with the election results? What can we do to keep students engaged and hold elected officials accountable between elections?

Fulfilling the Promise of Full Citizenship: History as Foresight into the Continued Struggle for Universal Suffrage

Join us for a dialogue on the history of voting, including this year’s 19th amendment bicentennial, realities of the suppression of Black voters, and conversations about how to meaningfully engage with the 2020 presidential election during a global pandemic. It will provide the basis for us to have a nuanced and action-minded discussion about the history, the current state, and the future of voting and civic engagement in the United States.

The F*** is happening: Voter Engagement in a Pandemic

We are currently living in unprecedented and chaotic times, and we need to be prepared to ensure that we and our community are ready to cast their ballot by November 3rd. This session will share how to make a plan to vote safely and ways to engage our campus communities this fall to ensure they are voting safely.

1:45 to 2:30 pm – Concurrent Session 2 (choose one)

Digital Engagement: Best Practices in “Socially Distant” Times

Attendees will learn about ways they can continue to do voter engagement through successful digital strategies. Campus representatives and staff from Facebook with share their tips and experiences for cutting through the noise and fighting misinformation.

2:30 to 3:00 pm – Plenary: Ask the Experts with Daniel Zeno, Policy and Advocacy Director, ACLU of Iowa and County Auditors

3:00 to 4:00 pm – What’s next? Networking session for attendees to discuss their plans and questions with each other and a closing reflection.

Grant Opportunity

The ALL IN Challenge will be distributing twelve (12) grants of $500 to campuses that complete the following tasks. Grants must be used to support voter engagement efforts on campus this fall.

    • Have at least three people attend the summit
    • Have signed up for the Iowa Campus Voting Challenge through Iowa Campus Compact and the ALL IN Challenge (check for your campus here and email Ryan Drysdale with questions ryan {at} civicnation(.)org)

Preference will be given to campuses that have also done the following:

    • Signed up for National Voter Registration Day on 9/22 (free to participate in)
    • Sign up for Vote Early Day the week of 10/17 (free to participate in)
    • Have submitted a democratic engagement action plan to the ALL IN Challenge

As we approach the summit date we will provide further information for your campus attendees.
