Community of Practice (CoP): Institution-level Assessment, Evaluation & Research on Community Engagement in Higher Educaiton

The purpose of this Community of Practice (CoP) is to create a space to pose questions, think through challenges of institution-level assessment, develop institution-level assessment processes or strategies, and identify tools to measure outcomes at the institutional-level, related to community-engaged experiences in higher education and the “impact” of community engagement for our institutions and communities.

Communities of practice are groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. — Wenger, 2014

Those invited to participate are in some way responsible for tracking, evaluating, assessing, or communicating the outcomes and development of community engagement across your institution. Those who will be invited are working towards assessing and evaluating the institutionalization of community engagement. Beginners, novices, intermediate and advanced practitioners of institutional research, assessment or evaluation related to community engagement will be identified by the Campus Compact of Indiana (ICC) Executive Director in communication with the Director of Assessment. Invitees will be selected from a growing list of people who have participated in past Campus Compact assessment-focused events, e.g. Rubric Working Groups, Engaged Grantees, co-authors, etc.

Participants can expect to:
• Stay abreast of current trends and initiatives related to assessment of community engagement at an institutional level.
• Participate in a structured environment that addresses common questions, issues, and possible solutions for monitoring and measuring outcomes associated with community engagement (student, community, faculty, institutional, and partnership development).
• Develop, share, receive feedback, and discuss the following:
o institutional metrics for community engagement,
o fostering engaged departments/school through the use of data
o creating internal and external reports on community engagement in order             to tell the story of your community engaged institution, and much more!

Participants will meet bi-monthly through an online platform (e.g., AdobeConnect, GoogleHangout, GotToMeeting.com, etc.).

Participation in this CoP is by invite only, with participants being selected and invited by the end of September 2015.

The first meeting is scheduled on October 20, 2015 from 2:30 – 4:00pm. Subsequent meetings will take place in December, February, April, and June—details to follow.

If you have any questions regarding this opportunity please contact Anne Weiss, Director of Assessment, Campus Compact of Indiana, haweiss {at} iupui(.)edu.
