The purpose of the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) is to give opportunities for student-athlete voice in the institution and conference; to review and respond to proposed NCAA legislation; to actively promote Iowa Wesleyan University athletics; to promote a positive student-athlete image; to increase fan support at athletic contests; and to support the campus and conference community through community outreach efforts.  SAAC at Iowa Wesleyan University is comprised of 20 student members representing 10 different athletic teams. This year, SAAC coordinated the Southeastern Iowa Special Olympic Spring Games at Maple Leaf Athletic Complex here in Mt. Pleasant. Eleven area counties united for one day to watch 182 Special Olympic athletes compete and 75 coaches mentor, while 180 volunteers (many of whom are Iowa Wesleyan students and employees) supported their efforts.  In total, 1,139 hours of service were contributed during the event. The impact on Special Olympians, the volunteers  and the Mt. Pleasant community is very special and truly coordinated entirely by the students. SAAC has made other meaningful contributions this year that have directly impacted the greater community by leading others to serve and give back through fundraising for the Games, Canned Food Drives for The Fellowship Cup, and other opportunities.

This award will be presented along with the other 2016 Engaged Campus Awards at the annual awards event on Tuesday, May 31 at 11:30 am in the Iowa Memorial Union at the University of Iowa.
