Facilitating Dialogue for Community Engagement

An engaged and impassioned community strengthens our democracy, but leading effective dialogue for community engagement has become increasingly difficult, and when derailed, can lead to chaos. Our highly polarized politics contributes to a “win-lose” mentality, limited resources heighten the stakes, and a frayed trust makes tackling public issues fraught. Designing and facilitating effective community dialogue requires coolness, clarity, courage and skill, as well as a clear and effective meeting structure. The University of Iowa and Iowa Campus Compact are teaming up to improve Iowa's public conversations with the "What's Next, Iowa?" initiative, a hub for community-based engagement. We will provide training and materials to help community members lead difficult discussions about public issues. This University-Community partnership is sponsored by the University of Iowa’s Department of Communication Studies and Office of Outreach and Engagement and Iowa Campus Compact. Engaged Campus Awards and Summit

The fifth annual Engaged Campus Awards are coming! We are looking forward to having the event in Cedar Rapids for the first time. An outline of the nomination process is available on the Engaged Campus Awards page. The 2018 Engaged Campus Awards will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. The event will be held at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Presidents, senior leaders, and committee members are invited to join our board meeting at 10 am. Fall 2018 Network Retreat

Join higher education staff, faculty, leaders, students, and partners for a network retreat focusing on important topics in higher education and community engagement. 10:00-11:30 am Dialogue Roundtable Participants will share information and resources on their on- and off-campus deliberation and dialogue programs and events. We will also share the latest information on our "What's Next Iowa?" dialogue initiative and how to get involved. 11:30 am-1:00 pm Lunch and Community Partner Discussion For lunch we will be joined by full-time national service members from across the state. We will present the findings of our statewide community partner perception study and discuss next steps. 1:00-3:00 pm Civic Action Plans: What have we learned and what's next?   We will share and discuss information on the Civic Action Plans that have been received to date and how we will support implementation. Save the Date for the second annual Iowa Civic Action Academy! This is a unique professional development opportunity for students interested in learning new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. It will be held November 9 and 10, 2018 at Drake University in Des Moines. Students from across the state and beyond (undergraduate, graduate, and beyond) are invited to learn from professional across sectors. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthropy, nonprofit leadership, dialogue, advocacy and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on other campuses and network with peers. Registration and the call for student proposals will open in August 2018.
