Join us for the 2017 Engaged Campus Awards 11:30 am to 1:00 pm - Engaged Campus Awards Lunch Awards will be presented in several categories. Learn more and make nominations! Following the awards, keynote speaker Dr. Timothy K. Eatman (@tkeatman) will provide a framework for discussion, inspiration and action about the importance of the mission of higher education. He will emphasize the power of publicly engaged scholarship and the urgency of transformation among institutions of higher education in the 21st century, including the need for full participation, dialogue and healing. Facilitator: Randy R. Stoecker, University of Wisconsin - Madison Description:  “Institutionalized service learning,” has its priorities reversed. It starts by focusing on student learning, then on “service,” then on “community” and only then on any kind of social change. In “liberating service learning” I reverse that prioritization to start with change, then community, then “service” and finally learning, and also develop new philosophical foundations and practices for each concept. This webinar will show the problems with the institutionalized service learning and the potential of liberating service learning.

Iowa Campus Compact is excited to announce a new collaboration that will expand and improve our annual regional conference. In 2017, state affiliates in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin are collaborating to offer the Midwest Campus Compact Conference. Join us June 6-7, 2017 at Loyola University in Chicago, IL for The 2017 Midwest Campus Compact Conference – Doing Democracy: Asset-Based Engagement and Culture Change. We’re all too aware these days that our nation is wrestling with racial divides, political polarization, and economic inequality that endanger our democracy. As we advance higher education’s public purposes–and gather in Chicago, home of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute–a focus on our campuses’ and communities’ strengths is critical. To sustain ourselves and enhance our impact, we must also go beyond simply adding more community-engaged courses, research projects, programs, and partnerships. Save the Date for our inaugural Iowa Civic Action Academy. This is a new, professional development opportunity for students interested in learning new ways of making a difference and building skills through civic and community engagement. It will be held November 3 and 4, 2017 at Grand View University in Des Moines. Students from across the state (undergraduate, graduate, and beyond) are invited to learn from professional across sectors. Sessions will offer skill-building in civic action including philanthrophy, nonprofit leadership, dialogue, advocacy and more. Students will also have a chance to learn what others are doing on campuses across the state and network with peers. Sponsorship opportunities are available, please contact Justin Ellis at jellis@iwcc.edu. Registration and opportunities to present will open later this year.
